170 new channels added to Google Tv

Google wants to increase the number of streaming users on its Google TV platform. To accomplish this, the company will add over a dozen Freeplay channels to its service, bringing the total to more than 170. Some channels are dedicated to holiday content, which should help you get in the holiday spirit without spending a dime.

While these are free channels, they are ad-supported, which will feel similar to watching traditional cable. When the content is free, it’s difficult to complain, though. Google added the following two channels in November.

Designated Survivor
Places and Spaces – The Great Christmas Light Fight.
Following those channels, Google added 13 more channels (as reported by 9To5Google), bringing the total to over 170. Here’s a list of channels that Google added to the service in the most recent December update:

  • Xumo Free
  • Holiday Movie Channel
  • Xumo Free
  • Holiday Classics
  • Xumo Christian Christmas
  • Continuum
  • Z Nation
  • The Design Network
  • FilmRise: Classic TV
  • UFC
  • Unbeaten
  • Big 12 Studios
  • Waypoint TV
  • PursuitUP

The holiday channels are most likely temporary, so the number of channels may fall below 170 again if Google removes them after the holiday season ends. However, the Freeplay app will gain channels if the company continues to add more than it removes.

In terms of channel removal, Google removed Motortrend Fast TV from the service, so if you were a fan of that channel, this is a letdown. There are other car-focused channels to watch, so hopefully they will keep you entertained despite the loss of Motortrend Fast TV.

To watch these free channels, you will need a Google TV device, which could be a TV with Google TV built-in or one of the best streaming devices that include it.
