Sony unveiled new display technology with individual RGB LED control

Density LED Backlights

Sony recently announced a new display technology that combines proprietary signal processing, individual RGB LED control, and high-density backlighting. To be clear, it is not OLED technology, but Sony claims it is just as good, if not better, in some aspects.

Sony’s setup separates the red, green, and blue LEDs, resulting in punchy and accurate colors and wide color gamut coverage even on large panels. The display’s precise backlight control also allows for delicate hues and light gradations. Sony claims that movies with deep blacks, precise light gradients, and subtle colors look stunning.

Let us talk specs. The new independent RGB LED design encompasses 99% of the DCI-P3 color space and approximately 90% of the ITU-R BT.2020 gamut. Zonal peak brightness exceeds 4,000 cd/m2, so HDR content will look fantastic.

But it is not all about brightness. Sony claims that precise backlight control resolves some issues with today’s OLED panels. There are no overbrightened elements, crushed blacks, or issues with intermediate tones.

Sony collaborated with MediaTek for the control processors, ROHM for the LED drive ICs, and Sanan Optoelectronics on the LEDs.

Sony intends to incorporate the new technology into consumer televisions and professional displays for content creation, which are expected to go into mass production this year.
